Mandrake

From the huge rock bridge above the abyss Nick looks down to the small river and the sea of green leafs surrounding it.

The bridge is not man-made. It’s a rock with the hollow middle base, arching above the valley.

With the sun already preparing to go down Nick sees his huge, long shadow stretching on the valley below.

All is quiet, – even suspiciously quiet…

Then he hears the taps. Someone is running up the hill to the place he’s standing.

Nick’s eyes are wide, his heart starts to beat fast.

Then he appears, – a boy, older than Nick, maybe 15 or so. His toned body is barely covered with some green cloth or a piece of garment made of plants. It’s hard to tell. That’s the only thing he wears, barely covering genitals. He is barefoot. Running up fast his bare feet are tapping on the rocky surface. His is suntanned, skin smooth and darker shade.

He is running up, holding a huge sack with both of his hands. Few seconds and he sees Nick. He slows down a bit.

— Hi, – as if nothing, he continues past Nick. Not running anymore, now with just fast pace, aiming towards the highest point of the rock.

Nick mumbles greeting in return and looks at the strange boy who has now stopped and is unfolding the sack. Green leaves were first out, then the full plant, with the stem barely seen from the soil. Finally the plant is all out of the sack.

— When I’m telling you, you inhale as much as you can and cover your ears!.. – the boy cries to Nick.

— It’s mandrake, isn’t it? – Nick is finally recognizing the plant, – Mandrake? From Harry Potter?..

— It’s mandragora of course!.. On the count of three…

— Wait!..

— One… Two… Three…

Nick does as the boy ordered, barely on time. The boy is pulling the leaves and the core fast and the mandrake is out of the soil screaming.

— For once and forever, it’s over! – the boy shouts throwing the screaming mandrake off the rock…

The sun is down. They don’t see what happens to the mandrake, they don’t hear it anymore.

The boy turns to Nick.

— Now we are free from it!

— Yeah?.. How… I mean, I don’t understand…

— Trust me, I know! We through it with the last beams of the sun, just in time!..

— Yeah?.. Who’re you?..

— I’m Fun. I came for you…

— Fun?..

— Yeap… All the way from the house on the tree I ran and finally got you here, just in time…

— Fun?… I don’t…

— Come on! Give me your hands…

Nick’s hand is now in the boy’s hand.

— Off we go! Sliding all the way to the other side! Hold tight!..

And they step and they are sweeping down the hill to the other side of the rock with such a speed that Nick can barely breath…

They’re both screaming as the slide is getting steeper and the huge abyss is sucking them down…

They look at each other. Hands are tight, holding each other. They scream, but they now do it with laugh. Sliding down the rock, huge speed, screaming, laughing…

Fun is back. Nick is screaming with happiness.

Sometimes you need to throw out the screaming mandrake for fun…
